Jabulile NhlapoNhlapo is a 21-year-old University of South Africa pupil who was allegedly shot dead by her ex-boyfriend, at a commune in Vanderbijlpark on Tuesday.
Her close friends claimed they saw the writing on the wall and then feared for her life however they didn’t know how to prevent it.
“We saw the signals that something terrible was going to strike her. However, we didn’t know how to prevent it,” her close friend Thando Miya stated.
The 29-year-old ex-lover was arrested by the police 24 hours after the murder and is likely to appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Courtroom today on a charge of murder.
“Jabu had made an effort to leave the relationship considering the fact that she said she was no more happy with him. He stated he would murder her if she did. It wasn’t physical abuse yet she was no longer happy with him,” Miya claimed.
Nhlapo’s death has once again brought into sharp focus the rising number of instances of gender-based violence perpetrated by romantic partners in South Africa.
