A rosy day, seasoned with different emotional flavours, affectionate behaviours, memorable and colourful acts, mild exhibitions and most importantly exchange of gifts, confectionery and vows.
Marking the late Saint Valentine of Rome in his loving acts, performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and also ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire, restoring the sight of his judge’s blind daughter and crowned it with a letter he sent to her with ‘Your Valentine’ as farewell before his execution; in Martyrologies as documented. The day first became associated with romantic love all over the globe in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. 18th century times in England, the culture evolved into an occasion in which lovers express their love and affection for each other by presenting flowers, confectionery, sending greeting cards known as “Valentines”.
Today’s Valentine’s Day symbol includes the heart-shaped outline, doves and figure of the winged cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten Valentines have given way to mass production of greeting cards. In Europe, Saint Valentine’s keys are given to lovers as romantic symbol of an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart, as well as children in order to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine’s Melody”. In Anglican Communion and Lutheran Church, Saint Valentine’s Day is an official feast day. Also, many parts of the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day, albeit on July 6 and July 30th, the former date in honour of the Roman Presbyter Saint Valentine and the later date in honour of Hieromartyr Valentine the Bishop of Interamna (Modern Terni).
In the African celebration of Valentine, it is so ironical of what Valentine truly mean. It is seen as a bunch of expectations not actually of flowers, greeting cards or confectionery, but of whole lots of sacrifices and gifts in nature of IPhone, Cars, New Clothes, Bottle of Perfumes, Romantic Dinner, Engagement Ring, and the laughable side of clubbing with exotic drinks and a must sex.
As centuries and generations emerge, love, selfless sacrifices and true affection losses it’s core values. The celebration of Valentine is a suitable illustration of how true and affection has gone into extinction. The bills of the spendings are taken up by the guy in the relationship, therefore he prepares and saves ahead of time, just to fulfill the expectations of his spouse on the Valentine Day, and that begets the question, does true love exist only for a day “Valentine’s Day”.
Every 14th February eve, the transportation sector records 35% income more, added to the normal daily income, as a result of young ladies travelling far and near to celebrate Valentine’s Day, only few has Valentine gifts to their man of of which does not worth quarter of 10peny while others visit with nothing rather on the mountain of expectations from their men. Only a few honourable ladies take their men on surprise when they even have nothing to offer. Clubs and hotels are blazing, filled with young men and women from different high institutions, languishing under the control and euphony of lust and drunkenness, all in the name of Valentine celebration. Fact remains that a lot of truly break up and situation influenced makeups happens on Today’s Valentine’s Day, which only takes determination and commitment to stand the taste of time after Valentine’s Day.
Over one million pregnancies are encountered every year just from the February 14th celebration, which 90% are denied ownership; 30% of which die in the course of abortion. Also 30% of the said figure have their lives led astray as a result of the awkward experience and regrets of being a baby mama of a denied child, while the remaining number of ladies attempt kr commit suicide. In all these acts, the question remains ‘do they represent and reflect the makeups of Saint Valentine’s Day?.
The exhibition and acts of Valentine Celebration should be a selfless and true cultured, where lovers, spouses and couples exchange and renew their love for one another, showing love and care to the less privileged, orphanages, the helpless on the streets, giving arms to the armless, hope to the hopeless, friend to the friendless, life to the lifeless, and meaning to the meaningless. Do you have three clothes and that man does not have any? Give him one. You have enough food? There is a hungry man in the street, find him and offer him some. Make that little girl having the feeling of low esteem understand that she is worthy of becoming someone better. Even to animals, show them love, give them nice and sumptuous meals today, you will see their appreciative looks and grateful gestures.
